MEDIA RELEASEOctober 16, 2009 WINE SHOW WINNERS ANNOUNCEDWine industry stalwart Wolf Blass Wines has proven its staying power at today's Royal Adelaide Wine Show, taking out the best wine in show title and a swag of other awards.
Their 2007 White Label Chardonnay won the Adelaide Trophy for Most Outstanding Red or White Wine in Show, the Seguin Moreau Trophy for Best Chardonnay in Show and the F Miller & Co Trophy for Best White Wine in Show.
The Barossa-based company also took out the Montgomery Trophy for Best Red Wine under $20, Best Red Wine in Show and The Radoux Australia Trophy for Best Dry Red Blend for its 2008 Yellow Label Shiraz Viognier, and Wolf Blass winemaker Matt O'Leary earned the Macquarie Private Wealth Prize for the Winemaker of the Most Outstanding Red or White Wine in Show.
The prestigious competition, which attracted 2,380 entries from more than 370 Australian wineries, was dominated by some of the industry's biggest names, with Hardys, McWilliams, Angoves, Brown Brothers, Penfolds and Yalumba all picking up awards.
The Gramp, Hardy, Hill Smith Prize for Most Outstanding Wine of Provenance - awarded for the first time in 2009 and believed to be a world-first - went to Wynns Coonawarra Estate for its Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon.
Sponsored by the State Government through Primary Industries and Resources SA, the category judged three vintages of one wine as a group, including the current vintage. The prize is named in honour of three legendary South Australian wine industry pioneers - Hugo Gramp, Tom Hardy and Sidney Hill Smith - who perished in October, 1938, in an aircraft accident.
Presenting the award today, Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Minister Paul Caica says the prize provides our wine industry with a vehicle to demonstrate South Australia's significant wine heritage.
"High quality wine is one of South Australia's hallmarks and is a long-term performer for the State's economy," Mr Caica said. "The winning Wine of Provenance - the Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon - has shown consistent high quality and regionality of style."
Overall, a total of 22 trophies, 123 gold medals, 189 silver medals and 583 bronze medals, across 61 classes, were awarded.
Following the Declaration of Awards ceremony, over 2000 winemakers, wine and hospitality industry staff will attend an invitation-only tasting of wines entered in the Show.
