For more than 100 years, Adelaide Showground has been a significant part of South Australia’s landscape - and sustainability plays a vital role in ensuring it continues to serve the community for generations to come.
Sustainability is more than an operational focus; it is embedded in the way Adelaide Showground plans, develops and delivers events and experiences. From reducing environmental impact to leading industry-wide initiatives, every step is taken with the future in mind.
Today, the precinct is powered by more than 12,000 square metres of solar panels, generating over 700 MWh of renewable energy annually and offsetting approximately 700 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. Complementing this investment, wind energy and water management initiatives help reduce reliance on external resources and support long-term environmental outcomes.
Adelaide Showground has also invested in greening the precinct, with hundreds of trees and new garden beds introduced across the site. Areas such as the Northwestern Car Park have been transformed into cooler, more sustainable environments that enhance the visitor experience.
Sustainability initiatives are especially important during major events such as the Royal Adelaide Show. In partnership with Australian Green Clean and other contractors, Adelaide Showground has implemented a comprehensive three-bin waste system and strict compostable packaging requirements. These measures contributed to an impressive 99.92% diversion rate from landfill during the 2025 Royal Adelaide Show, setting a benchmark not only in South Australia, but across the nation.
While proud of the progress achieved so far, Adelaide Showground remains focused on continuous improvement and innovation. The commitment is clear: to remain a leader in sustainable events and venue management for the next 100 years and beyond.
