The nation’s largest and most successful junior beef industry educational event – the SA Junior Heifer Expo – celebrated its 37th year in July.
A total of 194 entrants participated in four days of education and competition, as well as getting to form new friendships with others who share a passion for the industry.
Held at the Adelaide Showground, the expo is run each year by a group of volunteers – many of whom competed in their youth and now share the experience with their own children.
Families and breeders across South Australia support the expo and include it as part of their July school holiday calendar.
In 2023, entrants came from SA, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, and Queensland, ranging in age from eight to 24 years.
Expo coordinator Natalie Hann said this year “entries filled in less than 48 hours and this is on top of increased entry numbers from 2022”, which attracted 171 entrants.
“The expo has a long-standing reputation as being the best of its kind in Australia,” Natalie said.
“It has become a key part of the stud beef calendar and continues to produce outstanding young cattle enthusiasts – many going on to hold significant positions in the industry and contribute back to the event that helped them on their career pathway and interest in the beef sector.”
The expo had support from sponsors including the Show Society Foundation, the SA Cattle Industry Fund, Thomas Foods International, and Nutrien Ag Solutions. It ran from July 17-20, including an awards presentation.
